The best things to do in the Ardèche in summer, when you’re looking for something cool
Southern Ardèche in summer immediately brings to mind sunshine, limestone cliffs and the scent of the garrigue. But when the heat sets in, finding cool spots becomes essential to making the most of your family holiday.
Ideally situated in Lussas, within the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park, the Ludo Camping 3* offers a lush, idyllic setting. With our heated swimming pool and the river running right through the site, cool refreshment is right on your doorstep. For your excursions, here is our expert guide to the best activities and hidden gems to escape the heatwave.
1. The Louyre Canyon in Lussas: a shaded walk
You don’t need to travel miles to find a cool microclimate. The Canyon de Louyre is located right in the same town as our campsite.
- The highlight: This exclusive hike takes place at the bottom of a wild canyon, flanked by cliffs and dense vegetation that blocks out the sun’s rays.
- The experience: A fun, shaded trail, ideal for a cool family walk and discovering the mysterious geology of the Ardèche.
🥾 Hiking Guide
To help you set off on this adventure in complete safety, here are the key points of the route:
- Difficulty: Moderate (a few rocky sections where you’ll need to use your hands)
- Average duration: 3 hours 15 minutes
- Distance: 8.5 km
- Elevation gain: +240 m
- Route type: Loop
- Access and Starting Point: The route starts from the car park at the town hall or the church in Lussas (less than 5 minutes from the campsite). The path is marked in yellow and red (GRP) and then in yellow (PR).
- Expert recommendation: This route is best tackled in spring or summer in dry weather. The canyon floor offers remarkable coolness thanks to its steep sides, but it is strictly forbidden to enter it if there is a risk of a storm (risk of sudden rising water levels). Make sure you wear good walking shoes and take at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
2. Chauvet Cave 2 & the Aven d’Orgnac: the coolness of the underground
Beneath the surface, the Ardèche conceals some of Europe’s most beautiful underground cave systems. It’s the perfect way to beat the heat on a sweltering afternoon:
- Chauvet 2 Cave (Vallon-Pont-d’Arc): Located about 30 minutes from the campsite, the world’s largest replica cave immerses you in a constant temperature of 16°C so you can admire prehistoric masterpieces.
- Aven d’Orgnac: A spectacular journey nearly 120 metres underground, amidst cathedrals of stalagmites. The temperature there is 11°C to 12°C all year round.
- Expert tip: Remember to book your tickets online via the official websites to avoid queuing in the blazing sun. A light jacket is highly recommended for the whole family.

3. Swimming in the rivers at Balazuc and Vogüé
Forget the crowded beaches and head to the Ardèche’s most charming villages, all less than 20 minutes from the campsite, to cool off by the water:
- Balazuc Beach: Listed as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, the site boasts a lovely sandy and pebble beach overlooked by a majestic cliff. The water is perfect for a quick dip in the late afternoon.
- Vogüé Beach: At the foot of its medieval castle, the lake offers supervised swimming in summer within a natural rocky amphitheatre.

4. Canyoning and thrills with local guides
For those looking to combine thrills with white water, the rivers of the Ardèche offer superb canyoning routes (jumps, natural slides and abseiling beneath waterfalls).
- A trusted provider: We recommend you contact the Bureau des Moniteurs d’Ardèche Méridionale. Their state-certified guides lead safe excursions suitable for all levels (families or experienced athletes) in the area’s most beautiful canyons.

To combine historical mystery with geological wonders, head to the Coiron plateau, just a 15-minute drive from the campsite. The Balmes de Montbrun (Saint-Gineis-en-Coiron) offer a truly unique getaway.
- The cool factor: This exceptional archaeological site is an ancient medieval village entirely carved by hand out of volcanic tuff. Around thirty caves (some of which are two-storeyed) offer natural protection from the scorching heat of the summer sun.
- The experience: The site is situated in the heart of an ancient, collapsed volcanic crater, offering spectacular views over the valley. It’s a fun, shaded walk that’s ideal for children.
- Practical information: The site is open to the public and completely free of charge all year round. It is easily accessible via a short footpath starting from the church in Saint-Gineis-en-Coiron. Make sure you wear sturdy walking shoes!
